"With dismal polling numbers, Trudeau should know it's time to leave the stage..." June 19, 2023 Canadian News Update + Commentary
How Trudeau chooses to shapes his own legacy is anybody’s guess.
One of the trickiest skills any politician needs to know is when to leave the stage gracefully; and history shows that few, if any, have mastered that skill.
The once popular Brian Mulroney stayed on too long and left a weak and crippled Party to his successor Kim Campbell, and we know how that ended!
After Tom Mulcair lost the 2015 election to Justin Trudeau, he was bushwhacked at the next NDP convention and told his services were no longer required.
Now, it seems that Justin Trudeau is facing the same dilemma.
His personal polling numbers are dismal, even among Liberal supporters and there are those who feel that he should step down and give the reins to a successor who can revive Liberal fortunes before the next election.
But that decision is Trudeau’s alone to make and I don’t see him passing the torch.
He’s been counted down and out before and somehow he, and his Band of Brothers and Sisters have overcome seemingly insurmountable odds to vanquish their rivals.
Trudeau’s father forged his own legacy through sometimes choppy waters, but he was one of Canada’s greatest Prime Ministers; he stood up to terrorists and thugs and, of course, gave us the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
And, though humility was never a strong suit for the elder Trudeau, even he knew when it was time to exit.
I don’t think his son inherited that gene, so how he shapes his own legacy is anybody’s guess.
