Is former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney the federal Liberals ‘Savior in Waiting’ in the next federal election?
Carney’s name was bandied about as a potential leadership candidate when speculation was rampant that Justin Trudeau would step down after squeaking out a narrow minority government win in last year’s election, but that faded quickly when the Prime Minister said he wasn’t stepping down.

In the meantime, the Liberals continue to slide in the polls and the Prime Minister’s personal approval rating is in free fall, and that doesn’t bode well for the government’s re-election prospects.
Of course, there are senior Cabinet members like Chrystia Freeland and Anita Anand, among others, who might take a shot at the top job, but as members of the Prime Minister’s inner circle, they might be tainted by the negative feelings many voters have about Justin Trudeau.
Maybe what’s needed is a fresh face, with no direct ties to the Trudeau administration.
Enter, Mark Carney.
Carney has never been an MP, which would make him exempt from that negativity, although you can bet that Pierre Poilievre will relentlessly attempt to make that connection.
Carney’s resume, which includes stints as Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, make him well suited as someone who can address Canada’s economic concerns, but at this point, it’s all speculation.
Whether because of vanity or some deep political insight, Justin Trudeau thinks he’s the guy who can win yet another election, and even disgruntled Liberals are going to have to live with that!
