O'Toole says conspiracy theories promoted by some MP’s akin to antisemitism
Former Conservative leader Erin O’Toole is leaving politics at the end of the current sitting of Parliament, and like other MP’s who bring the curtain down on their political career, O’Toole offered some final observations of the current state of Canadian politics.
But, unlike so many others, O’Toole didn’t pepper his comments with partisanship and vitriol; quite the opposite, in fact.
O’Toole says that the siren song of social media has led some Canadian politicians astray.
He suggests that too many MP’s, on all sides of the House, are more concerned with garnering social media support than working in the best interests of the country; they listen to the loudest voices on social media and assume that’s the mood of Canadians.
O’Toole’s observations are astute and troubling.
There are people we have elected to the highest offices of government who use their position and social media accounts to spread disinformation and espouse conspiracy theories for their own political gain, with no regard for the collateral damage it causes to Canadians.
In fact, O’Toole says that the persistent conspiracy theories promoted by some MP’s about the United Nations and the World Economic Forum are not only untrue, but they’re only two or three steps away from antisemitism.
O’Toole’s comments are sure to ruffle some feathers, especially those of his successor who brazenly embraces some of the tactics that O’Toole lambasts.
MP’s are rightly concerned about foreign interference in our politics, but it seems they should also be wary of the enemy from within!
