"Foreign Interference is the greatest threat to Canadian national security and Canada is a main target..." Canadian News Update and Commentary May 28, 2023
Why are the Feds choosing Johnston's opinion over the advice of established expertise of the Five Eyes?
It was not lost on many of us that the very week David Johnston decreed that no Independent Inquiry was needed to explore the extent of foreign interference in Canadian elections, CSIS released the results of extensive research from the Five Eyes, which stated that Foreign Interference is the greatest threat to Canadian national security and that Canada is a main target of Chinese foul play.
David Johnston has a stellar reputation as an academic and statesman, but, to our knowledge, he has little to no expertise in ways of covert intelligence and counter intelligence operations.
So, why is the government choosing Johnston’s recommendation over the advice of established expertise of the Five Eyes?
There are just too many questions that remain unanswered.
Why is there such an acrimonious relationship between our security agencies and the Prime Minister’s office?
Why have Canadian governments, past and present, taken such a passive attitude toward foreign interference in our political, business and academic institutions?
And have our deficiencies in these areas diminished our standing with our Western allies?
We can’t trust politicians to get answers; they’re too wrapped up in their own political self-importance and partisanship to be of any good here.
But, we do need an Inquiry, because we’re always going to be viewed as a weak link by our allies if we keep sweeping our problems under the carpet and pretend that everything is OK. Especially when it doesn’t take an expert to see that it’s not.
