The United States is dealing with both another mass shooting, a new house speaker, and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
With 18 people reported dead, the shooting in Maine is now the deadliest in the U.S. this year. The suspect, an army reservist trained in firearms, remains on the loose.
Meanwhile, Mike Johnson, a new Republican speaker-designate, has been elected to the US House of Representatives after being elected in November. He has four terms and is aligned with the hard right conservative faction of the Republican party.
The US continues to monitor the Israeli government's ground invasion of Syria. The Americans have asked the Israeli government to slow down, as it puts the risk of hostages on the line. If any American hostages are killed, it could be problematic for President Joe Biden.
