"Ditching the glasses and tie isn’t enough: we want solutions, and so far Poilievre hasn’t done that." - August 9th Canadian news & commentary
Blaming Justin Trudeau for everything that’s wrong is certainly going to enhance Polievre’s standing with his extreme right wing base, but Canadian voters aren't naive.
Word from Ottawa is that a number of ambassadors from European countries are expressing concerns about trying to get a handle on where Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre stands on some key international issues.
It’s not as if those nations are conceding the next federal election to the Conservatives; foreign governments always try to get some info on the opposition leaders, so if there is a change of government they aren’t caught flat-footed.
It seems the areas of concern are regarding Canada’s commitment on environmental and global warming issues, support for Ukraine, and Canada’s NATO responsibilities.
The Poilievre team say it’s no big deal: Polievre is focusing on domestic issues like housing and affordability, which are the immediate priorities for most Canadians, and that makes sense, to a degree.
After all, historically, Canadians haven’t prioritized foreign affairs. But that was then, this is now.
In 2023, the world is on fire and most experts blame our lacklustre policies to combat global warming as a big part of the reason.
The ongoing war in Ukraine and the real threat of more Russian aggression is a major factor in today’s political and economic instability, and Canada’s NATO commitments to combat those threats matters to Canadians.
Blaming Justin Trudeau for everything that’s wrong is certainly going to enhance Polievre’s standing with his extreme right wing base, but Canadian voters aren't naive.
Ditching the glasses and the tie isn’t enough; we want solutions, and so far, Poilievre hasn’t done that.
