"Bell Media's CTV doesn't want to provide local news and Canadian programming after massive layoffs..." June 27, 2023 Canadian News Update + Commentary
News matters, and if the decision makers at CTV don’t know that or don’t care, maybe THEY should have received the layoff notices!
It was only a week or so ago that the head honchos at Bell Media, which is the parent company for CTV, announced massive layoffs of their news staffs, closing down two foreign news bureaus and shutting down or selling nine radio stations. So, maybe it should come as no surprise that those same journalistic luddites have asked the Canadian Radio and Television Commission to release them from their promise to provide local news and Canadian programming.
Think about that!
They fire 1300 news people and shut down a number of broadcast outlets and now they claim that it’s not fair to hold them to their promises to support Canadian programming and news.
That’s like the person who kills both parents and then pleads for mercy because they’ve been orphaned.
We’re not oblivious to the revenue problems all media companies are facing these days and there are no simple solutions.
But Canadians need to be informed and want to be informed, and that is exactly why CTV stations were granted licenses to broadcast in Canada.
We want to know who wins local elections and what those elected officials are doing with our tax dollars, among other pressing issues of our time.
Instead of living up to that commitment, it seems CTV wants to ignore local news and simply show everlasting reruns of The Big Bang Theory.
News matters, and if the decision makers at CTV don’t know that or don’t care, maybe THEY should have received the layoff notices!
